چکیده

Abstract Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is defi ned as a preventable and treatable disease with signifi cant extrapulmonary effects. Many of the extrapulmonary effects of COPD are thought to be mediated by systemic infl ammation. Local infl ammation has always been appreciated as part of the COPD disease process; however, it is becoming clear that the infl ammatory response is also systemic. There are multiple theories about the mechanisms driving the systemic infl ammation associated with COPD. However, there is no consensus on which theory is correct. The systemic infl ammation likely contributes to systemic manifestations of COPD, including cardiovascular disease, lung cancer, weight loss, osteoporosis and diabetes.

Metabolic syndrome and impaired lung function.

We read with great interest the recent article in CHEST (October 2009) 1 by Watz and colleagues showing an independent association between metabolic syndrome and systemic infl ammatory markers in chronic bronchitis and patients with COPD. The authors also demonstrate that the prevalence of metabolic syndrome does not increase for increasing COPD severity, as expressed by the Global Initiative f...

This review paper covered stress, management related to asthma, trauma, sepsis, infl ammation along with anxiety, and depression that occurs both in women with asthma, traumatic children and adult patients. These areas, induce immune function changes, which can lead to both trauma and proinfl ammatory activation known as systemic infl ammation response syndrome (SIRS). Related to sepsis. Stress...

Sepsis: a study of physician's knowledge about the Surviving Sepsis Campaign in Puerto Rico

Sepsis is a clinical syndrome characterized by systemic infl ammation and widespread tissue injury. It results from an excessive infl ammatory host response to an infective agent which, when generalized, involves normal tissue not originally affected by the causative organism(s) [1]. There is massive release of infl ammatory mediators, causing leukocytes to accumulate in organs distant from the...

Local versus Systemic Endomorphin 2 in a Carrageenan Model of Inflammatory Hyperalgesia

Infl ammation eff ectively increases the activation of opioid receptors on peripheral terminals of sensory neurons. Th e resulting infl ammatory hyperalgesia responds to local treatment with opioid analgesics by decreasing its intensity. Comparatively, much less is known about the effi ciency of opioid peptides administered peripherally at the infl ammation site. Th e study examined the antihyp...
